By Wilford Shamlin III (Philadelphia Tribune) – The School Reform Commission is again under fire amid criticisms over due process and lack of transparency in decision making after approving the sale of the shuttered William Penn High School and surrounding property to Temple University. The district’s spokesman Fernando Gallard dismissed the allegations on Thursday, saying the district followed protocol.
State Rep. W. Curtis Thomas, a Temple graduate who has advocated for gang violence prevention and quality of life issues in North Philadelphia, questioned what he called a lack of transparency prior to the School Reform Commission’s June 19 vote authorizing the sale of the vacant school property.
The veteran state lawmaker directed strong words at school leaders over the pending sale in a prepared statement and called for a reversal of the decision authorizing the real estate sale.
